Professor/Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Geography (Physical Geography)

Location: Department of Geography
Term: Full Time
Vacancy Number: A010-10J
Closing Date: 5 March 2010

We are seeking a physical geographer to join the academic staff of the Department of Geography in a continuing position. We are particularly interested in a physical geographer focussed on understanding contemporary Earth/environmental processes within the context of a changing environment, and who is experienced in the application of geospatial (GIS/remote sensing) techniques.

The Department currently has a strong profile in physical geography that we are seeking to strengthen by this appointment. Our research interests range from fundamental science questions, to applied science, to science underpinning resource management. Our main areas of current research and infrastructural support in physical geography include climatology, glaciology and coastal geomorphology, with strong international linkages with other universities and research organizations. As the result of a retirement, we are now seeking an appointee who can complement and/or extend this range of interests. There are significant opportunities for the development of additional research areas.

For appointment to this position, we are particularly interested in physical geographers specializing in one or more of the following areas: process geomorphology, alpine/mountain/polar environments, environmental hazards, climate change. We are also particularly interested in applicants skilled in geospatial techniques, such as remote sensing and GIS.

The University of Canterbury has easy access to a range of physical environments in a hinterland comprising the mountains of the Southern Alps, the braided rivers of the Canterbury Plains, and the varied coastal zone of the South Islands east coast. Potential field sites also include other parts of New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands and Antarctica.

The successful candidate will have a record of high quality research and be committed to excellence in teaching and graduate student supervision, as appropriate for their level of application. Applicants applying for Professor or Associate Professor will be expected to show evidence of academic leadership and a track record of obtaining external research funding.

This continuing position offers a significant professional opportunity in an established and high profile academic programme, with considerable potential to initiate new developments. The successful candidate will be joining a friendly and inclusive department that is collegial in its approach.

The University of Canterbury offers generous leave provisions, support for attendance at international conferences, research funding and superannuation benefits. It also has excellent childcare, recreation and staff club facilities on a park-like campus.
